BIO

Andy Cockburn is an Emeritus Professor of Computer Science & Software Engineering at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand.

His research concerns Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) --- designing, implementing, evaluating and modelling user interfaces, with a focus on understanding and exploiting specific underlying human factors to improve interaction. With over 200 publications, his contributions include many desktop and mobile interface designs that use human spatial memory to support  expertise development in basic tasks such as file retrieval, command invocation, window switching, and scrolling.

 

Andy has served on the Editorial Boards for leading HCI journals, including ACM ToCHI, the Human-Computer Interaction Journal, and Foundations and Trends in Human-Computer Interaction.   He served as papers co-chair for CHI 2014 and 2015, and as technical program co-chair for CHI 2020. In 2015 he was inducted to the ACM CHI Academy, which honours the principal leaders in the field.

 

Andy has consulted for many leading tech companies as an expert witness across various jurisdictions.
