BIO

I worked for 30 years as a primary and secondary school classroom teacher in Aotearoa New Zealand. I took a few years out of my teaching career to complete a PhD focused on the teaching of reading comprehension for middle-primary aged children. After completing my PhD I went back to primary school teaching for 13 years before moving into academia.

I am keenly interested in helping primary and secondary school teachers implement research-based best practice in literacy instruction. I have published research on the impact of structured literacy (using the Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA)) on the retention of literacy learning over the summer holiday break. I am currently working on new projects focused on teacher fidelity of practice after they have completed a literacy microcredential. I am also researching the effectiveness of reading comprehension instruction in a whole-class context in Aotearoa New Zealand. In fact, I am interested in anything to do with literacy within compulsory sector education.
