RESEARCH INTERESTS
Angus’ research centres on the ecological processes that govern freshwater biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and community dynamics in rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands. He investigates how hydrological change, habitat variability, and landscape configuration influence biotic interactions, resilience, and spatial organisation of aquatic communities. His work examines the ecological consequences of disturbance, flow alteration, and species introductions, with a focus on how these pressures reshape food webs, energy pathways, and ecosystem connectivity.
He is particularly interested in riverscape ecology, exploring how habitat size, spatial patterning, and cross‑ecosystem exchanges drive ecological responses across scales. Angus also studies the mechanisms underpinning ecosystem recovery, restoration effectiveness, and management interventions in human‑impacted freshwater environments.
Current research themes include:
- Drivers of freshwater biodiversity, resilience, and ecosystem stability
- Ecological effects of hydrological variability, flow change, and habitat dynamics
- Species interactions, trophic structure, and food‑web reorganisation under environmental stress
- Riverscape‑scale processes shaping fish and invertebrate distributions, especially in braided rivers
- Ecological responses to habitat drying, fragmentation, and disturbance regimes
- Evidence‑based approaches to freshwater restoration, rehabilitation, waterway management, and fisheries, including whitebait
