BIO

Dr. Annie Soutter Horton (PhD, University of Canterbury '13, MA, Stanford University '99, BA, Dartmouth College '96) is a lecturer in the School of Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment in the Faculty of Education at the University of Canterbury.  Annie teaches in the BA (Education) and Bachelor of Youth and Community Leadership (BYCL) programs. Her research focuses on student wellbeing, positive youth development, inclusive education pedagogy, and teacher education. She is particularly interested in how wellbeing is defined and applied in educational contexts and how emerging technologies can support critical reflection and work-integrated learning pedagogies.

Dr. Soutter co-developed the Student Wellbeing Model (SWBM), a comprehensive framework that conceptualizes student wellbeing across seven interrelated domains: Having, Being, Relating, Thinking, Feeling, Functioning, and Striving. This model has been instrumental in guiding the development of student wellbeing indicators and has informed educational practices aimed at fostering holistic student development.

Dr. Soutter’s interdisciplinary research spans multiple faculties and includes projects on youth anxiety and coping, values-based curricula in schools, cohort-development in engineering, and student engagement in geoscience, mathematics, and law education. She has extensive experience collaborating with the youth sector, having led projects such as knowPYD, an initiative aimed at supporting youth development practitioners in Aotearoa.

With a background in secondary and tertiary education in New Zealand and the United States, Dr. Soutter is committed to fostering inclusive, mana-enhancing learning environments that empower students to become leaders and agents of positive change in their communities.

Dr. Soutter looks forward to collaborating with colleagues across disciplines, particularly in research areas focused on supporting the wellbeing and reflective learning practices of students.
