RESEARCH INTERESTS

Ben’s research explores volcanic processes, hazard communication, and geoscience learning, with emphasis on the following areas:

Physical Volcanology

Ben investigates the processes that drive volcanic activity, including magma fragmentation, eruption dynamics, lava flows and domes, explosive eruptions, hydrothermal systems, and earthquake–eruption interactions. His work improves understanding of how eruptions begin, evolve, and impact communities.

Experimental & Analogue Volcanology

He uses high‑temperature and high‑pressure magma experiments, analogue modelling, and microtextural and petrological analysis to replicate volcanic behaviour and link microscopic textures to large‑scale eruption processes.

Volcanic Hazards & Risk

Ben supports hazard assessment and eruption forecasting through ballistic‑hazard mapping (using drones, cannons, and high‑speed imaging), hazard simulations, eruption‑scenario modelling, and integrating monitoring data with eruption‑video observations. These tools inform agencies responsible for volcano monitoring and hazard‑map development.

Geoscience Education & Science Communication

He is internationally recognised for advancing how people learn about Earth systems, including virtual and real field‑trip learning, digital storytelling for volcanic hazards, volcanology education research, and curriculum design. His work also includes community engagement and partnerships incorporating mātauranga Māori, influencing how thousands of students experience geoscience.
