BIO

I teach courses at the intersection of writing and computer science in topics like interactive storytelling, comparative media studies, game writing, and ethics and techniques of writing with and against writing machines.

For 20 years, my work has been about how new technologies are used by communities to tell stories of survival and how computational media changes the ways we collectively produce and read stories. Engaging with online collective writing and behaviour has led to projects with game companies like Riot Games on understanding and moderating hate speech, with support from groups like the US National Science Foundation and US Department of Defence on understanding and countering radicalization and violent extremism, with the Mellon Foundation on AIAI, an intentionally interdisciplinary network of researchers investigating how to enlist AI ethically, equitably, and in the service of justice, and with a consortium of more than a dozen Atlanta-area academic, civic, and cultural institutions on a decade-long urban studies public scholarship partnership, Atlanta Studies.

Prior to joining UC in 2025, I was a Teaching Professor of Technical Writing and Digital Humanities at Emory University, helped found the Creative Media Industries Institute at Georgia State, spent a few years in Boston with Writing and Comparative Media Studies at MIT, and taught in the College of Computing as a Brittain Postdoctoral Fellow with the School of Literature, Media, and Communication at Georgia Tech.

My work has appeared in Studies in Conflict & Terrorism, The Journal of Planning Literature, Housing Policy Debate, Cityscape, Digital Scholarship in the Humanities, and various proceedings by the Association for Computational Linguistic, IEEE, KDD, Computational Models of Narrative, Computational Humanities Research, and workshops on Abusive Language Online, Narrative Understanding, and other topics.
