BIO

My work has centred on understanding the physiology of fish and other aquatic organisms. Since my appointment as Emeritus Professor in 2021, I have continued to focus on how environmental factors—such as temperature, CO₂ levels, and feeding ecology—shape physiological performance in species ranging from pāua and snapper to Antarctic fish.
 
My research spans topics including blood physiology, growth dynamics, thermal tolerance, and digestive processes, with studies conducted in both temperate and polar environments. I have also contributed to the discovery of viral diversity in Antarctic fish and the development of methods for non‑invasive physiological measurement.
 
Beyond research, I have supervised numerous postgraduate projects on fish physiology and behaviour, helping train the next generation of aquatic scientists.
 
My broader service includes long‑standing involvement with Antarctic research committees and scientific reviewing across multiple journals.
