Since 2007 I have been a member of the Steering Committee of the MAF/NZFOA National Exotic Forest Description. The NEFD Committee oversees the collection and analysis of information on New Zealand's plantation forest resource.

In 2007 my leadership in forestry was recognised by the New Zealand Institute of Forestry (NZIF) with the award of Forester of the Year. I was nominated by Dr Andrew McEwen, NZIF President, with the citation stating: “There will be few NZIF members who have not heard of or come into contact with Bruce Manley. Such contact may have been from his ten years on the NZIF Council, his eight years chairing the Registration Board, or during the four years when he edited the NZ Journal of Forestry. Possibly of even greater significance is his 14 years as convenor of the Valuation Working Party. In this time the NZIF Valuation Standards were developed and adopted and have become the authority for the assessment of the value of New Zealand forests. The standards have also attracted overseas interest. Taken together Bruce’s efforts demonstrate his commitment and contribution to leadership, excellence, character and strength in the forestry sector at the very highest levels"

Since 2000 I have been a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Forestry.
