11th Conference on Performance-Based Codes and Fire Safety Design Methods - Invited Keynote Speaker - Update Design Fire Standards

Invited member of the Fire Expert Panel for the Large Scale Fire Test Programme, Singapore Land Transport Authority, 2010. Invited by the Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) to provide expert opinion on their fire test programme to share experience to enhance the project. The LTA is currently embarking on a fire tests programme with the intention to conduct large scale fire test with a fire suppression system in an overseas facility. This is the first time such tests on this scale have been conducted.

Chair of the host committee of International Standard Organization (ISO) Technical Committee 92 on Fire Safety Standards. In April 2010 I chaired the committee to host the ISO TC92 committee at the University of Canterbury. While here academics and students were able to meet and discuss fire research with fire experts from all over the world. The meeting lasted for a week and more than 30 fire researchers from laboratories and universities from all over the world.

While at the 9th IAFSS Symposium I successfully presented a bid to host the 11th IAFSS Symposium in 2014. This is the most prestigious symposium for fire safety research and being chosen to host a symposium is a reflection on the international stature of the Fire Engineering research program at University of Canterbury. We expect more than 200 fire scientists to be in attendance.

Member of the Fire Advisory Panel (FAP) for the Internal Affairs Department of Building and Housing (DBH) – Made up of leading experts, the FAP meets regularly to consider the strategic implications of current behavior, trends and development in the fire safety industry in relation to the DBH and the NZ Building Code. The fundamental role of the FAP is to help the DBH tune in to issues of concern at an early stage and see that action is taken to address these issues.
