I am currently engaged in a number of research projects around topics pertaining to educational philosophy and theory; the art of living and flourishing; and re-imagining educational futures. I am particularly open to doctoral students interested in research linked to one of these projects below.

Education for an art of living. This research project includes an international study exploring different national and cultural perspectives on what constitutes a ‘good and beautiful life’, which aspects support the pursuit of such a life and the development of an art of living, and what can be done in educational settings (inside and outside schools) to support people to develop their own art of living. The project also considers the societal implications of an education aimed towards the development of people’s own art of living.

Re-imagining education for flourishing futures. This project is a systematic review of the conditions of education and schooling to re-imagine an education system that is (i) supportive of the flourishing and development of students’ own art of living, and (ii) agile and responsive to the rapidly changing and developing future living and working environments of our society. Subprojects can include topics such as age-based groupings, grades in education, the traditional limitation of formal education to early life stages, centralisation of education within physical school buildings, the evolving role of teachers esp. in the context of GenAI, any other foundational assumptions and practices associated with education and schooling, also called the ‘grammar of scholing’.

PhD candidates are requested to submit research proposals that are clearly linked to one of these research projects. Other topics, linked to my larger interest area of social justice and education, can be considered on occasion.
