I was elected a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Forestry in recognition of my contribution to forest ecology and conservation.

I organised and coordinated the first NZ workshop on biodiversity offsets (University of Canterbury, 2009).

I was elected a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London in 2005 – the Linnean Society was established in 1788 and is the world’s premier society for the study and dissemination of taxonomy and natural history.

Chair, Scientific Programme Committee, International Congress of Conservation Biology (2011). This meeting attracted in excess of 1500 delegates from around the world and featured approximately 800 oral presentations, and numerous poster presentations. My main role with ICCB2011 involved running a peer-review process to select symposia and contributed papers for the meeting – this involved processing some 1500 abstracts and having these reviewed by a minimum of three reviewers each. The work continued right up to and during the meeting.

North American Forest Ecology Conference, University of Maine, USA - 1999. Invited by organiser - who payed all of my costs.

Invited to SCOPE/UNESCO workshop on emerging ecosystems, University of Granada, Spain - 2002 (fully funded). Resulted in a key paper outlining a novel approach towards understanding modern ecosystems being submitted to the leading US journal BioScience.

Invited to Australian National University workshop on sustainable forestry, Victoria, Australia - 2002 (fully funded). This has resulted in the publication of a book by CSIRO and Island Press in 2003.

High Country Section, Federated Farmers Annual Conference, Queenstown - 2002. Invited by organiser - who payed all of my costs.
