TEACHING & SUPERVISION SUMMARy
I am an award-winning teacher with a diverse skill set. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE), and I have a Postgraduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching.
I currently teach the following courses:
- CINE223/CULT214 Sex and Sexuality on Screen (sex, sexuality, bodies and censorship on screen in American film from pre-Code cinema to the present day)
- CINE225 Strange Bodies: Contagion, Transformation and Hybridity on Screen (intially a response to Covid 19, but now a course considering films from varied genres and tones that explore the limits and capacities of bodies)
- ENGL213/CINE224 Childrens' Classics: Popular Children's Texts and their Representation on Film (co-taught with Dr Dan Bedggood - adaptation studies through the lens of literature and film for young people)
- ENGL313/CULT317 Scream Theory: The Changing Face of Fear (horror storytelling and media, across forms, from theatre in the late 1800s to digital horror in the present day)
- ENGL232/CULT202 Cultural Politics/Cultural Activism (and introduction to Cultural Studies methodologies, and a survey course in critical theory)
I also contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate courses in our Writing and Creative Writing majors.
I have previously taught courses across subject areas and disciplines, including independent media (postgraduate course), drama and dramaturgy, gender and sexuality studies, and creative writing. I have taught into first year English and Cultural Studies survey courses, and have guest lectured for courses elsewhere in the university (including the French programme and the Digital Screen degree).
I won a prestigious UC Teaching Award for Outstanding Teaching and Learning Transformation with my colleague Dr Zita Joyce (Media and Communication). We taught and developed the Faculty's compulsory Masters / Honours course ARTS401 Arts Research and Scholarship: Introduction to Theories and Methods. This large and demanding course, which included cohorts of up to 45 postgrads each year, brought in dozens of experts across many fields, and included significant pastoral support and professional skills building components.
I am very interested in alternative pedagogies and assessment models, including creative approaches such as zine-making and in-class gaming sessions. I am active in skills development and sharing, including in developing an upcoming screen studies pedagogy dossier for the Screen Studies Association of Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand.
I am Programme Coordinator for the Cultural Studies programme, an interdisciplinary programme that brings together courses from across the Faculty of Arts. I am the point of contact for the Gender and Sexuality Studies minor, and the BA specialisation in Creative Industries and Contemporary Practice. I am happy to speak with students about study options in these fields.
