Research areas include Criminal Law, the Law of Contract, Intellectual Property Law and Legal History. His current research projects are in the fields of intellectual property law and legal history. The former includes aspects of copyright law, trade marks, passing off, and the accommodation of indigenous peoples' interests within the existing law. The latter focuses on comparative colonial legal history, the transmission of legal ideas and information between jurisdictions, the early legal history of Canterbury and the Canterbury Law School.
