DoctorJohn Reid

Professor Reid's research is undertaken closely with the Engineering Faculty at the University of Canterbury to develop and implement sustainability technologies in partnership with iwi. This work focuses particularly on the ethical and culturally grounded application of advanced technologies within environmental systems, including farming, forestry, freshwater, biodiversity, and landscape-scale management. A central theme throughout his research is the development of approaches that strengthen reciprocal relationships between people and the natural world. His work explores how Indigenous and Western knowledge traditions can engage productively to generate more adaptive, ethical, and ecologically attuned approaches to development. This includes research on Māori agribusiness, ecosystem restoration, environmental governance, and the role of Indigenous values in shaping future economic and technological systems. Professor Reid also works extensively with iwi organisations, government agencies, industry groups, and community partners. His projects often combine applied research with strategic development, aiming to translate complex systems research into practical outcomes for environmental management, policy and Indigenous development.
