"Discovering the history and uniqueness of the Waipara River on a guided tour with geologist Dr Kate Pedley." The Hurunui Garden Festival was launched early in 2018 by a group of local garden owners who wanted to assist with the Hurunui District’s recovery from the devastating Waiau earthquake of November 2016. Following a significant research period with the Kaikoura Earthquake fault rupture mapping team, Kate gave back to the region's community by partnering with local landowners to run tours for the Festival on understanding the local geology and the underlying tectonic processes. Tours ran from 2020-2025. Every year tours sold out and often ended up oversubscribed. Attendees report it was one of the top highlights for the festival.
