ProfessorLaura Revell

Professor Laura Revell is an atmospheric scientist in the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences at the University of Canterbury, specialising in chemistry–climate interactions, stratospheric ozone, aerosols, and airborne micro‑ and nanoplastics. Her research uses Earth system models and global chemistry–climate models to understand how human activities alter atmospheric composition and influence climate processes.

 

She is funded as a Royal Society Te Apārangi Rutherford Discovery Fellow (2023–2028), leading research on the climate and atmospheric impacts of airborne microplastics. Laura also investigates how the space‑launch industry and other emerging human activities affect the upper atmosphere and climate feedbacks.

 

Professor Revell contributes to several major international science and policy bodies. She serves on the UN Scientific Panel on the Effects of Nuclear War (2025–2027), is a Lead Author for the IPCC Seventh Assessment Report, an elected member of the International Ozone Commission (2024–2028), and a member of the UNEP Environmental Effects Assessment Panel, which evaluates the combined impacts of UV radiation, climate change and ozone depletion.
