BIO

Kia ora, I hold a Masters in Counselling (distinction) and PGCert in Health Science – Behaviour Change. I lecture for UC and have designed Counselling online courses within the faculty. Outside of UC, I run a private training and counselling service delivering workshops for health services and local NGO. I have previously lectured on both counselling and career degrees in Nelson alongside counselling in both schools and private practice. I have over 30 years combined experience working across Police, Department of Corrections and Ministry of Education.

I particularly enjoy exploring academic theory and research and how to transfer this knowledge into practice for positive client outcomes. Bridging the theory and practice gap is a skill I like to bring to my training and lectures. I am passionate about developing hope with clients in counselling and utilise Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) to enhance a sense of hope and connection to new possibilities and life changes with my clients. I completed qualitative research through Canterbury University relating to hope and SFBT when working with adolescents. This is accessible through the UC library, I am also a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and work within an integrative counselling model.

Outside of work, I am a mum, partner and outdoor adventurer at heart. I love hanging out with the kids and exploring their passions while also tramping, kayaking, biking and gardening. On a wet day I might be found enjoying a good book or playing the guitar.
