Co-convenor of New Zealand Water Post-Graduate Research Workshop, Christchurch (July 2011). The Universities of Auckland and Canterbury combined to provide a one-day workshop on water-related post-graduate research. 11 post-graduates presented research in the morning sessions. Attendance included a number of industry leaders as well as academic staff with a total of 43 in attendance. One afternoon session provided keynote talks by water industry leaders, a second provided post-graduate students with advice on career development, and a third was a facilitated workshop to identify key needs for the water sector. The workshop met a need for post-graduate students to present their research and also to develop professional links.

Member of Waste Technical Advisory Group for the NZ Emissions Trading Scheme, Ministry for the Environment. I suggested that I would be available for this advisory group, and was one of 6 people nationally appointed in 2010. This group met 3 times in Wellington and developed a number of documents to help develop the regulations. I was the only one with research experience, and I believe my appointment was to fill a perceived gap in research knowledge needed to advise on new regulations.

Chartered Professional Engineer-- Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (since 2007). The application requires demonstration (both through printed evidence and an oral interview) of competency across a range of criteria. It also requires demonstration of continuing professional development. Few research engineers have CPEng status. An ability to form a bridge between research and practice for an applied discipline such as engineering is critical to long-term research impact within NZ.
