Dr Masayoshi Ogino's research centres on Japanese language education not merely as the acquisition of a new linguistic system, but as a pathway for cultivating well-being, connection, and shared flourishing among learners, teachers, institutions, and communities.

He is particularly drawn to the deeper human dimensions of communication — how language learning can nurture not only linguistic competence, but also happiness, fulfilment, empathy, and a sense of belonging. Drawing on second language acquisition, positive psychology, neuroscience, and educational practice, his research seeks to design learning environments where language development and well-being grow together.

A further focus of his work is building connections between Japanese language education in New Zealand and that in other parts of the world. He sees Japanese itself as a powerful bridge linking teachers and learners across regions and cultures. Through engagement with a language known for its distinctive sound quality, vowel-final rhythm, and cultural associations with harmony, care, and consideration, Dr Ogino's research asks how language education might contribute to the well-being of individuals, organisations, and wider communities.
