This paper summarises results of three recently published studies which provide information regarding the status of emperor penguins. In the first study, using several model types, emperor penguin population trajectories were assessed against the International Union on the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List criteria1 and shown to be Vulnerable to Critically Endangered, depending on the model scenario. The other studies helped inform how environmental factors influence juvenile survival and fledgling abundance. These studies show that emperor penguins may remain vulnerable to the projected effects of climate change. SCAR continues to encourage Parties to support collaboration across national Antarctic programs to improve understanding of observed population change of emperor penguins.
