The Norman Medal recognizes a paper that makes a contribution to either practical or research aspects of engineering disciplines. The practical value of contribution and its impact on engineering practice are important considerations The award may be presented annually to the authors or authors of an original paper not previously contributed in whole or in part to any other association or otherwise appeared in print prior to its publication by the Society. Papers published in a print issue of an ASCE journal in the twelve-month period ending with June of the year preceding the year of award are eligible. Each ASCE Organizational Entity may recommend for review up to two candidate papers for consideration by the Paper Review Committee. The Norman Medal is the highest honor granted by the American Society of Civil Engineers for a technical paper that "makes a definitive contribution to engineering science".

Outstanding Paper Awards for Earthquake Spectra are awarded to authors of papers judged to be outstanding contributions to earthquake hazard mitigation. Papers of recipients must be judged to have made a significant impact on the profession, to provide a significant advance in the state-of-the-art or understanding of a particular topic, to be of exceptional technical quality with concise and informative illustrations and to be well written for a broad audience. Only papers published in issues of Earthquake Spectra during the preceding calendar year shall be eligible for consideration.

ANZ JOINT SOCIETIES AWARD 2007; 10th Australia New Zealand Conference on Geomechanics, Brisbane, 24 October 2007. The Joint Societies Award of Australian Geomechanics Society and New Zealand Geotechnical Society is presented at the ANZ Geomechanics Conference (in 4 year intervals; regional conference of ISSMGE) for the most valuable conference paper (committee: Australasian VP's for ISSMGE, ISRM and IAEG, and the Chairpersons of the AGS and NZGS). Over 300 papers were presented at the Brisbane conference.
