The Perceptual Origins of Core Knowledge and Mathematical Cognition

Research shows that we are born with core knowledge systems that support basic intuitions about space, time, objects, number and motion. These systems provide the foundation for our knowledge of the world, but their integration is poorly understood. We propose that core knowledge systems and mathematical cognition share a common basis in how our perception is structured. Building on our recent work which suggests a psychological origin for arithmetic, we plan 1) experiments to test adults’ ability to learn perceptual relationships across core knowledge domains and 2) to develop a naturalised account of mathematical knowledge
