History of colonial empires in the Pacific, as well as in Australian and New Zealand social and religious history. His major research has focused on the patterns of European colonial rule in the Pacific, especially the German empire in the early 20th century and he has published several books on these topics. He teaches in Australian and New Zealand history and the history of empires. He also teaches a postgraduate course on the history and nature of biography.
