BIO

Emeritus Professor Peter Steel is a distinguished inorganic and organic chemist whose career at the University of Canterbury spans decades of influential research, teaching, and academic leadership. His work has made significant contributions to heterocyclic chemistry, coordination chemistry, and the design of complex metallosupramolecular architectures.

 

Peter’s research encompasses the synthesis of new heterocyclic ligands, including binucleating and monochiral systems, and the study of their transition‑metal complexes. He has been a leading figure in metallosupramolecular chemistry, using metal ions to direct the self‑assembly of structurally novel molecular cages, rings, ladders, clefts, and helicates—systems that have expanded understanding of molecular topology and function.

 

He has also made major contributions to the field of cyclometallated compounds, particularly in the synthesis of multiply metallated complexes and the use of NMR spectroscopy to predict regio‑ and stereochemical outcomes in cyclometallation reactions. His work on heterocyclic ring systems and tautomerism has further advanced structural and mechanistic insight within heterocyclic chemistry.
