The Edward F. Arnold Visiting Professorship was established in 1968 with a bequest from Mr. Arnold to bring to Whitman College and the Walla Walla Valley a distinguished teacher or authority. I was appointed to establish a course in advanced Materials Science for their physics and Chemistry programmes. This course was to better prepare their graduates for future research degrees.

I was invited and appointed to an expert panel to review the performance and direction of the Department of Physics at the University of Otago. This review comprised a 3 day on-site visit from 23 - 25th November 2009, as well as the prior preparation digesting submitted materials and post-meeting formulation of a report. The review encompassed the teaching and research performance of the Dept. A result of the review was to provide guidance to the Dept to concentrate its research directions towards its cold-atoms strengths. Subsequently several new academic staff appointments were made in this direction and it is very pleasing to note that the Dept has gone from strength to strength in research funding, particularly successful Marsden applications.

In 2001 I was invited to become a member of the International Committee for the DPC conference.
