RESEARCH INTERESTS

Professor Sally Gaw’s research interests centre on environmental chemistry, emerging contaminants, and the environmental toxicology of pollutants affecting ecosystems and human health. She investigates the sources, behaviour, and fate of contaminants, including microplastics, a, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), pesticides, trace metals, and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), across freshwater, marine, terrestrial, and atmospheric environments.

Her work focuses on chemical fate and transport, contaminant pathways, with particular interests in how pollutants move through and transform within environmental systems and human exposure. She conducts research on freshwater contamination, marine pollution, Antarctic environmental protection, soil contamination, and coastal ecosystem resilience, using advanced analytical chemistry and mass spectrometry techniques.

Sally’s research supports environmental risk assessment, regulatory science, and sustainable chemical management, contributing to improved environmental quality, ecosystem protection, and evidence‑based environmental policy at national and international scales.
