RESEARCH INTERESTS
Sarah’s research sits at the intersection of synthetic biology, industrial biotechnology, agricultural greenhouse‑gas mitigation, and microgravity science, with a focus on developing biological systems that deliver environmental, societal, and space‑exploration impact.
Her terrestrial research uses synthetic biology, structural biology, and bioprocess engineering to create sustainable bioproducts, novel therapeutics, and low‑emissions agricultural technologies. Her work on methane‑inhibitor delivery for pasture‑fed ruminants contributes to climate‑resilient farming systems and supports Aotearoa New Zealand’s emissions‑reduction commitments.
Her space‑focused research advances microgravity biotechnology, structural biology, and in-space biomanufacturing, designing biological platforms and experimental systems that support drug discovery and development and enable long‑duration spaceflight, off‑Earth habitation, and in‑situ bioproduction. This includes developing microgravity research hardware and biological payloads that expand global capability in space biology.
Across all areas, she prioritises responsible innovation, science communication, and equity in STEM, ensuring that biotechnology solutions are trusted, inclusive, and aligned with community and industry needs
