Member of Conference Committee, International Conference on Biomass-Energy Technologies 2012 Joint with AIChE's Symposium 2012, 22-24 October, 2012, Nanjing, China. I was invited to review conference papers and chair a session.

Fellow of International Academy of Wood Science (FIAWS) (2011-present). I was elected to the Fellow of International Academy of Wood Science for my recognised contribution to fundamental studies and technology development in processing of wood and wood based products. IAWS is an international society of scientists and educators in wood science and technology. The Fellow election is through nomination by current fellows followed by voting by all current fellows.

Fellow of The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (FIPENZ) (2011-present). I was elected as a Fellow for my recognised contribution to processing of woody biomass feedstock into value added products and energy.

Member of Advanced Liquid Biofuel Steering Group, New Zealand (2010-present). This is a national group of research leaders on liquid biofuels. I was selected for my research on biomass gasification and liquid fuel synthesis. My role is to provide advice on annual symposium and national research collaboration in this area.

Member of Conference Committee, International Conference on Chemical and Biological Utilization of Biomass Resources 2010, 22-26 October, 2010, Nanjing, China. I was invited to provided advice on the conference theme and to chair a conference session.

Chartered Professional Engineer, The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) (2008-present, registration has been renewed annually).

Board member, Bioenergy Association New Zealand (BANZ) (2007-present). BANZ is a national society of New Zealand to promote collaboration and commercialisation of biomass utilisation for energy. BANZ board has been active to provide advice to government for making polices on future energy. BANZ board compiled New Zealand BioEnergy Strategy in 2010.

In the last 6 years (2006-2011), I organised and chaired three workshops on Biomass Gasification and Bioenergy as listed below: 1. 13th February 2008, Room F3, School of Forestry, University of Canterbury, with 45 participants of researchers, government officers and engineers/managers from industry. 2. 5th February 2010, Room F3, School of Forestry, University of Canterbury, with 35 participants of researchers, government officers and engineers/managers from industry. 3. International Workshop on Biomass Gasification and Alternative Fuels Development on 14th April, 2011, Copthorne Hotel, Commodore, Christchurch. Speakers invited were from New Zealand, Australia, Austria, USA. Over 40 people from universities, research institutes, energy industry, wood processing industry and engineering consultancy companies attended this workshop to learn about the latest progress in biomass gasification R&D and commercialization.

Member and Country representative, Task 33 Thermal Gasification of Biomass, International Energy Agency (IEA) Bioenergy (2004-present). This IEA Task is responsible for international R&D collaboration on biomass gasification and promotion for commercialisation. There are currently 12 countries in this task and members are leaders in the field of biomass gasification. Members meet twice a year and organise workshops following each meeting. I organised a workshop and task meeting in April 2011, in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Member of International Drying Symposium Advisory Panel (2002-present). This Panel is a group of international leaders on drying research and development. It promotes international research collaboration and commercialisation for drying technology, and selects organisers to host bi-annual international drying symposium (IDS). The members also review the conference papers for IDS.

Member and New Zealand Representative, Task 33 (Biomass Thermal Gasification), Bioenergy Group, IEA (International Energy Agent). The Tast Members and country's representatives are recognised experts in that field. The Tast represents the international leading group who provide advice and recommendations for research directions and policies on biomass gasification research and industrial application.

Member of International Drying Symposium Advisory Board (since 2002). International Drying Symposium is an International Conference for Drying which is held every two years.

Member of SCENZ (Society of Chemical Engineers of New Zealand)

Technical Committee Member, NZ Wood Quality Intiative Research Consortium (WQI). This is a national research consortium which shareholders include 13 New Zealand Forest companies and two research organisations. The Technical Committee provides directions for research and makes decisions on research projects.
