RESEARCH INTERESTS

Steve Carr’s research examines humour as a structural condition within contemporary art rather than a stylistic device. Through sculpture, moving image, and installation, he investigates how modest acts of material transformation—collapse, puncture, suspension, release—can destabilise assumptions about seriousness, value, and permanence. His work focuses on duration, repetition, and anti-climax as compositional strategies that recalibrate scale and expectation. By staging moments that hover between bathos and revelation, Carr explores how humour operates not as entertainment but as a critical method, testing how cultural depth and significance are constructed, performed, and quietly unsettled within contemporary art contexts.
