The International Research Center for Japanese Studies' ("Nichibunken", Kyoto, Japan), 23rd international symposium, held for the first time in NZ. 25 leading experts in Japanese Studies in New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, the USA and Japan, presented their work to showcase the diversity and depth of Japanese Studies.

I was a Visiting Fellow at Ryukyu University, Okinawa, Japan in June 2014 and again in February 2015.

Organised and hosted an international workshop with colleagues at Tohoku University, Japan, titled, "Tohoku/Christchurch: Reflections on the Socio-cultural Impacts of the Quakes". The workshop featured presenters from overseas (Tohoku University & Kobe University) and NZ (UC, Otago) from various fields including Japanese Studies, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Creative & Performing arts. Other participants included academics, students and researchers from UC, CPIT, Lincoln, and ECAN.

Chair of the Pacific, European and Asian Languages Advisory Group (PEALAG) since 2009. This advisory group comprises heads of schools of languages and cultures at NZ universities. It meets at least once and normally several times a year to discuss common concerns, areas for collaboration, future strategies, government policy etc in relation to teaching and research in the field of languages and cultures. A major project to come out of our discussions was the National Network for Provision of Languages at Tertiary Institutions (2009-11). This involved collaborative provision of languages and cultures papers across tertiary institutions (UC, Otago, Waikato, AUT and AU). In addition to supporting and enhancing the relevant subject areas, this project has led to rapid advances in research across the participating institutions on the pedagogy of foreign languages, especially in the area of e-learning and remote delivery. As a group we have also presented submissions to the Minister of Tertiary Education.

As Chair of the Pacific, European and Asian Languages Advisory Group since 2009, I organize meetings (1-2 annually) of heads of schools of languages and cultures at NZ universities, chair our discussions (covering common concerns, areas for collaboration, future strategies, government policy in relation to teaching and research in the field of languages and cultures etc), organize additional skype/conferencing sessions where the need arises, oversee the actioning of decisions made, including writing of letters, submissions, contacting key people etc.

Invited to apply for and granted a Visiting Fellowship at the Center for Northeast Asian Studies, Tōhoku University for 4 months from February to May, 2006.

Elected member of Japan Association of Society and Literature (Nihon Shakai Bungakukai) since 2006

Granted a Japan Foundation Fellowship for ten months from July 2002 to May 2003 to conduct research on contemporary Japanese novelists with a special emphasis on Shono Yoriko and Matsuura Rieko. This is a prestigious and much sought after but difficult to obtain fellowship. It is unusual to be granted the fellowship twice.

Granted a Japan Foundation Fellowship for ten months from July 1995 to May 1996 to conduct research in Japan on postwar Japanese women writers. This is a prestigious and much sought after but difficult to obtain fellowship.

Chaired panel at Tohoku/Christchurch: Reflections on the Socio-cultural Impacts of the Quakes international workshop in Christchurch, New Zealand on 30-31 Oct 2014

Invited by the International Institute of Okinawan Studies at Ryūkyū University, Okinawa, Japan, to give a public talk in November 2011 on acclaimed contemporary Okinawan novelist, Medoruma Shun as part of their special lecture series. Because of additional workload as a result of the earthquake, I requested that the talk be pushed back to February 2012. This went ahead in February as planned and was very well received.

Invited by Tōhoku University, one of the top three national universities in Japan, to present research at an international conference they hosted in Hokkaidō, Japan from 28~29 September. All expenses, including airfares and accommodation were paid by Tōhoku University. (2007)

Invited to give a public talk in Sendai City, Japan as part of of celebrations to mark the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Northeast Asian Centre at Tōhoku University. Tōhoku University is one of Japan's top three national universities. This talk was very well received and later published by the Northeast Asian Centre. (2006)

Invited to give an address on my research at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), Wuhan, China. Delivered a two hour seminar on Medoruma Shun on 14 December, 2010.

Invited to give a panel address at an international conference in Sendai (Japan), hosted by Tōhoku University, one of Japan's leading national universities. All expenses, including airfares and accommodation were paid by Tōhoku University. (July, 2008)

Invited panelist for a symposium at Tokyo University, arguably Japan's leading university, on the future directions of Japanese literature.
