I have been working as a Māori/public health researcher since completing my Masters degree in public health in 2000. I have been involved in research across a wide range of areas relating to Māori advancement, including traditional Māori healing, Māori-focused service, programme and organisational evaluation, and Māori community, iwi and hapū development. I recently completed a PhD in Health Sciences, investigating the concept of identity as it features in the lives and experiences of Māori adoptees.I have been working as a Māori/public health researcher since completing my Masters degree in public health in 2000. My background as a nurse in ICU and mental health led to my initial research around families / whanau and their experiences following a death in ICU. I am a qualitative researcher interested in practice based and educational research. Using a phenomenological approach to explore how people create meaning and purpose in their lives is an ongoing theme in my research and practice.
I have many years of experience in nursing and health educational leadership and management. My interest in health workforce planning and development has contributed to leading numerous collaborative projects between education and practice including curriculum development, evaluation and innovation in educational delivery.
My career has spanned New Zealand, Australia, the UK and the South Pacific. My teaching and research are in the field of counselling and counsellor education. I explore emerging counsellor identities, pedagogy of counsellor education, and social constructionist and post-structural approaches to counselling, including Solution-focused Brief Therapy. I take a critical approach to research with an interest in the relationship between material, social, and cultural realities and individual experience and agency. I draw on feminist, qualitative, arts based and critical posthumanist research methodologies.

Dr Phil Borell has been researching and teaching in Aotahi: School of Māori and Indigenous Studies since 2008. Phil graduated his MA with Distinction in 2013. His thesis provides a thorough analysis of Māori contributions to the sport of rugby league between 1908 and 2012.
In 2022 he completed his PhD thesis, titled 'PolySaturated: Illuminating Polynesian Experiences in Professional Rugby League'. This doctoral thesis utilizes Māori and Pasifika research methods (Pūrākau and Talanoa) to give voice to the experiences of Polynesian (Māori and Pasifika) athletes in professional rugby league.
Phil's research has grown out of his time as a rugby league player, fan and now as a trainer in Canterbury's Premier rugby league competition.
Phil has also published written works examining Māori sporting practices; indigenous masculinity; the politics of sport in Aotearoa-New Zealand; and sport and education in Aotearoa-New Zealand. Alongside my research background, I have had experience as lecturer, tutor, and a strength and conditioning coach. I am passionate about teaching and research and enjoy working in many different areas of sport and health science.

My work focuses on the creation and erosion of wellbeing in places. I have examined processes and events that contribute to lived experiences of distress and difficulty in a number of towns, cities and regions in New Zealand and the UK, while also working to identify the collaborations, policies and practices able to facilitate wellbeing within them.
My early research considered rural and urban places disrupted by economic restructuring and neoliberal welfare reform, while more recent projects have focused on disaster-affected places. When examining these variously disrupted environments, I have investigated the spaces and settings within them that people experience as supportive, enabling and therapeutic and even, on occasion, as transformative. Empirical investigations in this regard have encompassed community drop-in centres, retreat centres, respite care agencies, residential care facilities, and urban community farms.
I am currently an Associate Editor for Health & Place and the New Zealand Geographer, and an editorial board member for Social & Cultural Geography; Emotion, Space & Society; and the Australasian Journal of Disaster & Trauma Studies.My work focuses on the creation and erosion of wellbeing in places. Through her research, she explores what students learn through school-based health education and how the subject can shape people's lives, relationships, decision-making, and long-term well-being.Her scholarship is informed by qualitative, post-qualitative, and post-human perspectives, which offer innovative ways of thinking about learning, knowledge, and the complex relationships between people, places, materials, and educational systems. Professor Nick Draper has been a researcher and teacher at the University of Canterbury for over decade, but has a wealth of experience developed as a practitioner. Nick’s research has a translational focus with the aim of finding solutions to real-world problems. Nick has a thorough understanding of the elite performance sport environment, having been a sport and exercise scientist for British Judo for 8 years and a Selector and Team Manager at European Championships, World Championships and Olympic Games. He has written training programmes for World and Olympic medalists, supporting athletes to success at the highest levels in sport. At a grassroots level Nick continues to coach junior rugby and judo players and has also coached 1st XV and Reps rugby in NZ. Nick started his career as a physical education teacher, graduating from the University of Exeter, and teaching at primary, middle and high school levels.
Nick completed his research training at the Universities of London and New Mexico where he received a thorough grounding in qualitative and quantitative methods, both of which he applies to research problems in his chosen field of exercise physiology. Through his research training and depth of his experience as a practitioner Nick is able to bring a practitioner’s and researcher’s knowledge to solving real-world problems. As a researcher Nick has led or been involved in over 20 successful competitive grants in New Zealand and the UK totaling over $10 million. Dr Wendy English is a research advisor and specialist palliative care nurse at Nurse Maude in Ōtautahi, Christchurch.
Her fascination with rapport and connecting with patients and their whānau/families, led to a Master’s degree at University of Canterbury and further to a PhD through the University of Auckland. In October 2023, Wendy was awarded a Communio post-doctoral research grant through the Te Ārai palliative and end of life care research group in the Auckland School of Nursing.

Recent projects include a focus on child and youth screen media use in relation to developmental outcomes including language, educational skills, social functioning, and mental health.
Dr. Gath specialises in secondary analysis of large-scale datasets, including work with the Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI), the Growing Up in New Zealand study, the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, and the national assessment dataset from the Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA).Between Sept 2024 and Aug 2026, Dr. Gath has an Emerging Researcher Fellowship with the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation (CMRF) to examine the developmental impacts of screen media use in childhood.

A/Prof Gieseg’s research team examines the role of the white blood cells called macrophages in disease and injury. The major focus of the research is on cardiovascular disease which causes strokes and heart attacks. Macrophage cells collect in people’s artery walls over time, where they damage and then accumulate the damaged cholesterol particles from the blood. It is the build-up of the cholesterol filled macrophages which cause the artery wall to become stiff, budge out and narrow, so slowing the flow of blood.
As Head of Artery Imaging and Principal Biochemist for MARS Bioimaging Ltd, A/Prof Gieseg directs research on imaging diseased arteries using the MARS Spectral CT scanners. This break-through X-ray technology was developed at the University of Canterbury in collaboration with CERN and the Universities of Otago and Lincoln, allows the contrast free imaging of soft tissues at high resolution.
The laboratories biochemistry work focuses on how the damaged cholesterol particles are formed by the macrophage and how these particles cause the macrophages to die, so destabilising the artery walls. This research has progressed to examine how the cholesterol particles affects the inflammation activity of the macrophage in the artery wall. The research has involved growing human white blood cells and artery tissue specimens from surgery in the laboratory before MARS-CT imaging. Through these studies the team have developed sensitive measurement methods to measure inflammation and oxidative stress by both blood and urine analysis.
This technology has been applied to the inflammation monitoring of body builders, cyclist, professional rugby players, cage fighters, stroke and surgery patients and patients in intensive care.A/Prof Gieseg’s research team examines the role of the white blood cells called macrophages in disease and injury. The major focus of the research is on cardiovascular disease which causes strokes and heart attacks. Macrophage cells collect in people’s artery walls over time, where they damage and then accumulate the damaged cholesterol particles from the blood. It is the build-up of the cholesterol filled macrophages which cause the artery wall to become stiff, budge out and narrow, so slowing the flow of blood.
As Head of Artery Imaging and Principal Biochemist for MARS Bioimaging Ltd, A/Prof Gieseg directs research on imaging diseased arteries using the MARS Spectral CT scanners. This break-through X-ray technology was developed at the University of Canterbury in collaboration with CERN and the Universities of Otago and Lincoln, allows the contrast free imaging of soft tissues at high resolution.
The laboratories biochemistry work focuses on how the damaged cholesterol particles are formed by the macrophage and how these particles cause the macrophages to die, so destabilising the artery walls. Dr. Jeremy Hapeta (Ngāti Raukawa) is an Associate Professor in Māori Sport, Physical Education and Oranga (Wellbeing) at the University of Canterbury's Te Kaupeka Oranga (Faculty of Health). Prior to joining UC, he worked at the University of Otago's School of Physical Education, Sport & Exercise Sciences and at Massey University. During those times, in terms of Governance, he also served full terms on Boards of Trustees at Saint Bernadette's School (Dunedin) and Aokautere School near Palmerston North, where he was co-opted on to that Board.
Currently, he is in his second term as the 'Te Pae Oranga o Ruahine o Tararua' (Iwi Māori Partnership Board) appointed member to the Sport Manawatū Board. Recently, together, these partners just won the Jim Maniapoto Memorial Award at the 2025 Sport New Zealand Awards for their successful partnership between Te Pae Oranga o Ruahine o Tararua and Sport Manawatū. In relation to other skills, he has a Bachelor's degree in Education (Primary Teaching) a Post-Graduate Diploma in Physical Education, a Masters’ in Education and was a fully registered, scale A, classroom Teacher before joining academia and completing his Doctoral studies in Sport and Exercsie.

My research interests are mostly qualitiative, exploring real world experiences and people's social realities, including understanding their beliefs, attitudes and motivations. I am particularly interested in the health and wellbeing of Māori communities and how culture, identity and positive connections to te ao Māori impact upon individuals and whānau.
