    Don Hine is a professor of psychology at the University of Canterbury, specialising in environmental psychology. Don’s work focuses on understanding the factors that underlie environmental problems such as resource over-consumption, climate change, air pollution, and invasive species. His research group designs and evaluates behaviour change strategies to help solve these problems.

    Don has authored over 100 peer reviewed publications, has extensive experience in curriculum development and teaching and has been involved in numerous community projects addressing air quality, biodiversity and the management of invasive animals.

    Lynette is an environmental psychologist whose research is focused on improving human behaviour change to achieve better outcomes for people and the environment. Her interdisciplinary approach to research is guided by thirty years of experience across both science and social science fields. She has held professional research positions within the NSW Department of Primary Industries and New England University, before moving to the University of Canterbury in 2022. Lynette’s research involves working with organisations and the community to better understand target audience behaviour, and to assist in the design of more effective behaviour change interventions to manage a range of environmental issues, such as free-roaming cats and dogs, widespread weeds, chemical spray drift, human waste management, freshwater conservation, and biosecurity reporting.

    My main research efforts address foundational questions in cognition and perception, with a focus on implications for mathematical cognition. I also have interests in comparative cognition, developmental psychology, environmental psychology, and theoretical issues in psychological science. I completed my doctoral research in experimental psychophysics, prior to which I trained as a philosopher specialising in the philosophies of mind and science.

    I currently teach PSYC107: Foundations of Psychological Science and PSYC209: Sensation and Perception.

    My research explores factors that shape and motivate (prosocial) behaviour in the context of large-scale global social issues, such as climate change mitigation, sustainability, or public health crises, with the goal of informing both theory and practice. I am specifically interested in the role that individual, social, and contextual factors play.
    Questions I am asking include: How do emotions influence behaviour and can positive emotions help to tackle the climate crisis? How does the behaviour of others around us, especially trends in society, affect our own decisions? In what way does the information we receive and in particular how it is communicated shape our perceptions and actions? What is the role of transparent evidence communication versus persuasive approaches?
    I explore these questions from a variety of methodological angles; from large-scale cross-cultural surveys, to experiments, and field studies.
