My research is aimed at understanding how tourism can be a tool for sustainable development. Applying critical and community-engaged approaches, I explore how social entrepreneurship can make tourism an equitable and sustainable form of livelihood for local communities and subsequently create positive community change. Advocating for sustainable consumption in tourism, my research also examines the environmentally responsible behaviours of tourists. My other research interests include community development, geotourism and geopark development, and critical tourism studies. I serve as Research Notes Editor for Tourism in Marine Environments, Editorial Board Member for Tourism Management Perspectives, and Review Editor for Frontiers in Sustainable Tourism. Apart from academic research, I have been actively involved in practitioner-based research for tourism planning consultancy projects in the Philippines and New Zealand.

I teach, research, and consult on national level export promotion and business level export development. I'm interested in the structural attributes (e.g., entrepreneurial ecosystems, export promotion programmes, free trade agreements, and national export strategies), the strategic postures (e.g., ambidexterity, entrepreneurial orientation, and export orientation), and operational aspects (e.g., export assistance, export financing, and internationalisation pathways) shaping international success. My work speaks to policymakers, captains of industry, and international entrepreneurs.
Prior to embarking on a career in academia, I spent 10 years in industry where I held roles in international logistics and retail management. The experience, which includes stints in the USA and Zimbabwe, has given me a wealth of knowledge on practical aspects of cross border commerce. I also lean on my personal experience as an aspiring entrepreneur. This enables me to bring theory to life with real-world examples.I teach, research, and consult on national level export promotion and business level export development. Dr Paul Knott undertakes research, research supervision and publication in strategic management, strategy-as-practice, and innovation management. A central theme of his research is how strategy actors individually and collectively harness concepts, tools and materials as they undertake day-to-day practices aimed at consequential outcomes for their firms or organisations. This encompasses activity across levels and roles, and lends itself to a variety of primarily qualitative research methods. Recent focus areas within this theme have included individual strategists’ navigation of nascent opportunities, strategy development processes across multi-unit firms, and collaboration in networks of small firms. This has entailed study across different business and cultural contexts, including small high-technology ventures in Aotearoa New Zealand and the informal sector in sub-Saharan Africa. Current research interests include constraints imposed by technological paradigm limits, and strategic management imperatives arising from progressive impact of climate change.
