Recent topics include: the nature and impacts of different weather systems in the New Zealand region (particularly on temperature and precipitation patterns); effects of complex terrain on regional and local weather and climate (e.g. sea breezes, foehn winds, cold pools and fog development); effects of weather and climate variability in agriculture, including evaluation of the suitability of sites in complex terrain for different crops (e.g. seed crops, vineyard development for different grape varieties) and frost impacts; wind energy potential in regions of complex terrain and short term prediction of wind energy generation; investigation of the processes controlling the thermal environment of coral reefs; evaluation of the air pollution potential in regions of complex terrain; effects of air pollution on human health; meteorological effects on wild fire behaviour and dust transport; improvements in the application of weather/climate models to a range of different applications.
