BIO

Dr Emma Maurice (Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga) is a Learning Advisor at the University of Canterbury's Academic Skills Centre and an Indigenous philosopher specialising in Māori and Indigenous epistemologies.

Her research examines Indigenous agency in settler colonial contexts, with particular focus on 19th-century Ngāi Tahu letters to newspaper editors. She completed her PhD in Indigenous Philosophy in 2024, and her work combines philosophical frameworks with historical analysis to reveal positive moments of Indigenous self-determination within colonial archives.

Emma is committed to developing evidence-based, culturally responsive academic support models for Māori, Pacific, and neurodivergent students, and maintains an active research profile with publications and conference presentations in Indigenous philosophy and decolonising education.
