SERVICE & LEADERSHIP SUMMARy

Dr Mark Staiger has made sustained contributions to academic service and leadership throughout his career at the University of Canterbury, supporting the development of materials science and engineering education, research capability and postgraduate training. His service reflects a commitment to strengthening both the University’s engineering community and the broader materials science profession.

Within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr Staiger has contributed extensively to teaching leadership and curriculum development, particularly in materials science and engineering. Through courses including ENME207, ENME307 and ENME417, he has helped provide students with a progressive understanding of materials, from fundamental structure–property relationships through to engineering performance and the design, processing and characterisation of advanced polymers and composites. His teaching leadership has included responsibility for advanced undergraduate materials education and, previously, service as Director of Studies for fourth-year Engineering.

Dr Staiger has also provided substantial research leadership through postgraduate supervision and the development of interdisciplinary research programmes. His supervision has encompassed a diverse range of materials research, including biodegradable metallic biomaterials, polymers, composites, bioaerogels, natural fibres, recycled materials and nanostructured materials. This breadth has enabled him to connect researchers across traditional disciplinary boundaries and to develop research capability at the interface of materials science, mechanical engineering, biotechnology and sustainability.

His leadership extends beyond the University through international research collaboration, peer review, professional engagement and editorial service. His involvement with the international materials and biomaterials communities has helped build connections between fundamental materials science and emerging applications in healthcare and sustainable materials technologies. His service on the editorial board of numerous journals reflects his contributions to the international research community and his standing in the field of materials engineering.

A consistent feature of Dr Staiger's service and leadership has been a willingness to support emerging researchers and engineers. Through teaching, supervision, mentoring, collaboration and professional service, he has contributed to building the next generation of materials researchers while promoting the role of materials science in addressing major societal challenges.

Overall, Dr Staiger's service and leadership are characterised by long-term commitment, interdisciplinary collaboration, research mentorship and a strong connection between academic engineering and real-world societal needs.
