TEACHING & SUPERVISION SUMMARy

Dr Staiger has extensive teaching experience in materials science and engineering, with responsibility for undergraduate courses spanning the fundamental principles of materials through to advanced polymeric and composite materials.

He teaches ENME207 – Materials Science and Engineering, introducing students to the fundamental relationships between material structure, processing, physical properties and engineering performance across metallic, ceramic, polymeric and composite materials.

In ENME307 – Performance of Engineering Materials, Dr Staiger teaches the application of materials science to engineering design and performance, covering elastic and viscoelastic behaviour, creep, stress relaxation, design for manufacture of polymeric materials. The course emphasises the relationship between material chemistry, structure and physical properties and their influence on engineering performance.

At the advanced level, ENME417 – Advanced Composite, Polymeric and Ceramic Materials focuses on the structure, properties and processing of non-metallic materials, with particular emphasis on polymer and composite materials, mechanical behaviour, materials selection and design. The course includes practical laboratory experience in composite manufacture and mechanical testing, including CFRP laminate manufacture and testing.

Together, these courses provide a progressive materials-engineering curriculum, taking mechanical engineering students from the fundamental science of materials through to the prediction of engineering performance and the design, manufacture and characterisation of advanced materials.
