BIO
My research interests broadly focus on international relations and the international political economy of development. My research has examined: the European Union (EU), and particularly its external relations (including its role as a development actor); regionalism, interregionalism and transregionalism in global governance (focusing on the EU, ASEAN, MERCOSUR and ASEM); and the Sustainable Development Goals. My current research explores issues of geopolitics and development in the Pacific Islands space.
My recent publications include the edited volume Against the Tide: Aotearoa New Zealand in World Affairs (Wellington: Te Herenga Waka University Press), the fifth in NZIIA's New Zealand in World Affairs series, and the articles Aotearoa New Zealand, AUKUS, and the Anglosphere: navigating security identity amidst geostrategic change (Australian Journal of International Affairs) and Between tides: examining China discourses in Pacific Island news media (The Pacific Review).
I am currently part of a project examining Germany-Pacific Island engagement and discursive representations in German and Pacific media, funded through a Faculty of Arts Digital Research Seed Fund grant. I have also been involved in recently completed international research projects on the 'EU and Social and Scientific Innovation to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals' (coordinated by RMIT, Australia) examining sustainable regional growth and smart specialisation, on 'European Union-Asia Pacific Dialogue: promoting European integration and mutual knowledge across continents' (coordinated by the University of Deusto, Spain), and on 'EU Public Diplomacy and Outreach in New Zealand' (coordinated by the University of Canterbury). I have also recently completed a project ('HUI-EU') co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, delivering a series of doctoral workshops in the Asia-Pacific region.
I am the Editor-in-Chief of the Scopus-indexed Australian and New Zealand Journal of European Studies (ANZJES), Managing Editor of the New Zealand International Review (NZIR), an Executive Committee member of the European Studies Association of Australia and New Zealand (ESAANZ), and a member of the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs (NZIIA) and the European Union Studies Association of the Asia Pacific (EUSAAP).
