NZIIA Pacific Symposium 2024: International Politics in the Pacific: Navigating Geostrategic Competition
Event organised by the NZIIA in cooperation with the Pacific Cooperation Foundation and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.
This Symposium brings together a group of experts from the Pacific region for workshops to discuss how international politics, including geostrategic competition, are affecting the Pacific, and how to respond to this in the best interests of the region. Attendees will be leading thinkers from universities, think tanks, NGOs and businesses from Pacific countries, including New Zealand and Australia.
The project is delivered by New Zealand Institute of International Affairs, an independent non-government organisation that fosters discussion and understanding of international affairs, especially relating to Aotearoa New Zealand. The Symposium is funded by the Pacific Cooperation Foundation and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.
The objectives are:
• Evaluate and understand how external powers, including nation states and other actors, are engaging in the Pacific region, and the extent to which New Zealand and other Pacific countries can influence this.
• Understand from Pacific points-of-view, the kind of engagement the region seeks from external powers in the context of climate change, greater geopolitical competition, challenges to established international systems and barriers to economic and social development.
• Consider ways in which New Zealand can better engage with the Pacific, while respecting the agency and autonomy of peoples, smaller states, and regional institutions in the Pacific.
In approaching these objectives, NZIIA will adopt an approach that:
• Fosters expert discussion and understanding of these issues, both for the Symposium participants and the broader public
• Is neutral and non-partisan, creating a platform for expert views.
• Complementary to other initiatives and organisations
• Collaborative, bringing together a range of organisations.
