RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research and publications are interdisciplinary and provide scope for original findings across a number of fields within Classics. Specific areas of research include:

         

(i) Greek and Latin language and literature. 

 

(ii) Greek literature and intellectual history from Homer to Aristotle; early reception of epic; lyric poetry (esp. Pindar); Greek theatre (esp. tragedies of Aeschylus and Euripides and satyr play), the Sophists.

                

(iii) ancient visual aesthetics and psychological theories; the role of visual artworks in Greek literary and philosophical texts; art and text in ancient Greek culture.

                      

(iv) Ancient rhetoric and literary criticism, esp. before Plato; the emotions in antiquity.

 

(v) ancient athletics in its broader cultural context

 

(vi) reception/use/abuse of Classical culture from the 19th to 21st centuries.
