Description

The Virtual Production (VP) Studio at UC’s Koawa facility is a purpose-built environment for next generation screen production, bringing together film, animation, VFX, and game development in a single integrated space. Centred around a 14 m × 4 m LED wall, the studio enables real time, in camera visualisation and immersive worldbuilding, supporting both teaching and commercial grade production. Designed as a collaborative hub for all Digital Screen programme disciplines, the VP stage provides students with hands on experience using the same technologies driving contemporary film and television production. The facility is already attracting industry interest, with visitors consistently noting the scale, capability, and flexibility of the space. Recent commercial use includes a three-day shoot by Firefly Films, who captured simulated travel sequences for the feature film Holy Days KEY FEATURES: • 200 m² production stage • 14 × 4 m fixed LED wall (1.9 mm pixel pitch InfiLED panels) • Two 2 × 2 m movable LED walls (3.9 mm pixel pitch InfiLED panels) • Two 3 × 3 m movable LED walls (5.9 mm pixel pitch InfiLED panels) • Two Brompton Tessera SX40 LED processors for high precision colour and frame synchronisation • Two render machines with RTX 6000 GPUs for real time scene generation • Two workstations with RTX 4070 GPUs for on set control and content management • Sony FX9 camera with genlock synchronisation to LED walls for seamless in camera VFX • 20 camera OptiTrack motion tracking system for virtual camera, performer, and object tracking • Pixera for seamless video and image playback • Unreal Engine for real time 3D rendering and virtual environment creation • Three phase power distribution supporting high demand production equipment • Motorised lighting truss for flexible, safe, and efficient lighting configuration
