EquipmentAntarctic Weather Stations
Description
The School of Earth and Environment at UC operates a number of automatic weather stations across the Antarctic regions of the Ross Sea and the McMurdo Dry Valleys. These stations support research across climate, glaciology, and environmental change. Standard measurements include wind speed, wind direction, air temperature, relative humidity, incoming short‑wave radiation, and barometric pressure, with an SBD modem transmitting data at 6–10‑hour intervals. Weather stations are located at: - Cape Christy, Ross Sea Region - Mt Haystack - Miers Ridge, McMurdo Dry Valleys Region - Miers Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys Region - Granite Harbour, Ross Sea Region — includes soil temperature and soil moisture - Mt Flemming, Antarctica — includes soil temperature and soil moisture - Wright Ridge, McMurdo Dry Valleys Region - Commonwealth Glacier, McMurdo Dry Valleys Region — includes ice‑temperature profiling and four‑component net radiation - Harrowfield Hill, Antarctica — includes vertical wind speed and four‑component net radiation The Harrowfield Hill station is operated in collaboration with KOPRI and Victoria University of Wellington (VUW). The stations at Granite Harbour, Mt Flemming, and Wright Ridge were funded by Antarctica New Zealand.
