GeoHealth Laboratory

Te Taiwhenua o te Hauora | GeoHealth Laboratory (GHL) is a world-leading centre for research at the intersection of geography, health, and data science.

We use cutting-edge spatial analysis, epidemiology, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to uncover how the places that people live, work, and move through can shape health and wellbeing.

Our research portfolio spans several themes that aim to better understand some of New Zealand's most pressing health challenges. GHL research spans health inequities and access to healthcare, active transport, environmental exposures, obesity, immunisation, and climate resilience to name a few.

By combining innovative geospatial methods with rich population data, we reveal patterns that are often less well understood and then provide evidence to inform public policy that can improve health services or create healthier, more equitable communities.

The GHL also works closely with government agencies, local authorities, health providers, and international collaborators and is recognised for delivering research that is both scientifically rigorous and directly relevant to real-world decision making, contributing to wider societal impacts resulting from our academic research.
