RESEARCH INTERESTS
Research interests include monetary policy in open and closed economies. My work has appeared in leading peer-reviewed international journals, prestigious encyclopedias, and handbooks edited by experts. I have also co-authored a book on optimal monetary policy (1st edition 2007,, 2nd edition 2019). Many of my research projects have included student participation. In total, I have published 16 articles with 14 of my Honours and Masters students in refereed journals and handbooks. Recently, I have published two articles on the linkage between openeness and inflation. The genesis of this research project, partly funded by the Reserve Bank, was a research paper in ECON 326 (Monetary Economics) crafted by a UC undergraduate student in 2019. Hamish McHugh-Smith is the co-authro of both articles in the Journal of International Trade and Economic Development and the Handbook of Behavioural Macroeconomics.
