ZonMw has launched a new programme, Fostering Responsible Research Practices (FRRP), to encourage quality, integrity, efficiency and positive social impact in scientific and academic research. We are convinced that sound practices add value to science and to society. FRRP aims to build bridges between science, professional practice and policy by promoting research which is relevant, robust and transparent. It will develop and disseminate useful know-how to improve research-related practices – not just for front-line scientists and institutions, but also for policymakers, financiers and evaluators. A clear orientation towards health issues is essential.

I was invited into the this strategic university working group to work out a plan for a Design Thinking School within UC. We organized a series of workshops within and outside of UC and negotiated with several external partners, such as Tait, The New Zealand Merino Company, AuCom Electronics Ltd and others.

I was invited to the LEGO Mindstorms Developer Network to help the company with the development of its new EV3 platform.

Program committee member and publicity co-chair for the International Conference on Social Robotics in the years 2009-2010. This newly established conference in the field of human-robot interaction is associated to the International Journal of Social Robotics. As a member of the program committee I was responsible for managing the review process of submission.

Program committee member for the Human-Robot Personal Relationship Conference in the year 2009. As a member of the program committee I was responsible for managing the review process of submission.

Program committee member for the International Symposium on New Frontiers in Human-Robot Interaction in the years 2008-2010. This conference is associated to the Interaction Studies journal. As a member of the program committee I was responsible for managing the review process of submission.

Program committee member for the IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (Ro-Man) in the years 2007-2010. The Ro-Man conference is an established conference series that is running for 19 years. As a member of the program committee I was responsible for managing the review process of submission.

Program committee member, video session chair, web chair for the ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction in the years 2007-2012. This is the most highly esteemed conference in the area of Human-Robot Interaction with an acceptance rate of only 26%. As a member of the program committee I was responsible for managing the review process of submission.

I was invited to speak at the LEGO First League Robotics competition. This robotics competition for high school students is an excellent way of getting boys and girls interested in science and technology. (2011-present)

Invited speaker at the Podium of the ICT&S Center, Salzburg University, Austria on May 3rd, 2010. My presentation on the relationship of design and science was of high relevance to the ICT&S Center.

Panel Speaker at the International Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI2009) in Boston on April 7th, 2009. Our paper entitled “Scientometric Analysis Of The CHI Proceedings” was selected by the program chairs to be presented within the framework of a dedicated panel that discussed the implications of our contribution. Only two papers (less than 1%) were selected for a panel presentation.

Invited speaker at the Pictoplasma Pictopia Art festival on March 19th, 2009 in Berlin, Germany. My presentation on the Uncanny Valley Theory attracted an audience of approximately 1000.

Invited speaker at University of Venice, Italy, on May 15th, 2009. The faculty appreciated my presentation on design science.

Invited speaker at the Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan on October 6th, 2009. My presentation on the algorithm march was well received by the students and staff members.

Invited speaker at the Flirting with the Future Conference (SIDeR 2009), Eindhoven, The Netherlands on April 15th, 2009. An audience of approximately 200 conference participants visited my presentation.

Invited speaker at the second AISB symposium on the role of virtual creatures in a computerised society, Aberdeen, UK, on April 1st, 2008. The symposium was particularly interested in my work concerning the animacy of robots.

Invited speaker at the Science Cafe – Dutch Design Week, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, on October 23rd, 2007. The panel discussed the relationship between robots and society.
