IMPACT SUMMARY
Nicola's research has contributed to a growing understanding of the factors that influence student success in accounting education. Her work has helped shift attention beyond academic ability to consider the important role of self-efficacy, belonging, motivation, engagement, and other non-cognitive factors in shaping learning outcomes. Her findings have informed teaching practices, curriculum design, and student support initiatives both within New Zealand and internationally.
Beyond her research, Nicola has had a significant impact on the accounting education community through leadership, mentoring, and service. As President of the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (AFAANZ) and through ongoing leadership of its education portfolio, she has helped shape conversations about the future of accounting education across Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. She has also contributed to the development of emerging scholars through mentoring, doctoral supervision, conference leadership, and editorial roles with leading accounting education journals.
Nicola's current work explores how accounting education can support the development of informed and responsible judgment in an increasingly complex and AI-enabled world. Through this research, she aims to influence how accounting educators prepare graduates for professional practice, helping ensure that technical knowledge is complemented by the judgment, adaptability, and decision-making capabilities required of future professionals.
